Most of Gethsemani’s monks have been infected with COVID-19 over the past week. In general, symptoms have not been severe and some brothers have been completely asymptomatic. It is unclear how the outbreak started. The community was up to date on its vaccinations and boosters.
On Friday, July 8, a brother wasn’t feeling very well. He went to the infirmary and tested positive for COVID-19. He self-isolated and, though no one in the house showed symptoms, all were tested that day. 11 brothers tested positive and were quarantined as well.
Physical distancing measures were implemented throughout the house, masks were worn – but each day more brothers tested positive. As of July 16, 28 monks had been infected.
Even with the majority of the house quarantined in their rooms, monastic life continued. The few brothers that did not catch the coronavirus admirably filled in as needed, ensuring that the liturgy continued, and that the physical needs of the community and retreatants were met.
Brothers who tested positive were asked to self-isolate for five days. They are now beginning to re-integrate into community life, but will wear masks and continue to practice physical distancing for another five days.
We thank God that none of the brothers have fallen dangerously ill. We pray for all those who have been and continue to be impacted by the pandemic.
