Fr. Alan Hohl, 95, died on Dec. 16 after living 66 years of monastic vows and 58 years as a priest.
A Chicago native, Fr. Alan entered Utah’s Holy Trinity Abbey in 1953. Gethsemani founded Holy Trinity in 1947. When Holy Trinity closed in 2017, the remaining monks’ stability was transferred to Gethsemani, though they opted to remain in Utah at an assisted living center.
Before entering the monastery, Fr. Alan was a U.S. Navy pilot and, after World War II, a crop duster. During his time at Holy Trinity, he served as infirmarian and was the monastery’s superior for a short time. Blessed with a good voice, he served as cantor many years as well.
A funeral Mass for Fr. Alan was celebrated on Dec. 2 in Salt Lake City. Fr. Lourduraj Gally Gregory, chaplain of the nursing home, presided. Abbot Elias Dietz concelebrated along with Fr. Alan’s confrere Fr. Patrick Boyle and priests of the Diocese of Salt Lake City.
Fr. Alan’s body was buried with his confreres in the cemetery of Our Lady of Holy Trinity Abbey, which is being maintained even though the monastery itself has been cleared.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
